Basic Personality:

Upon an initial encounter, Jiei would hardly stand out in a crowd of wolves, much less be noticeable at all. To strangers she is quiet and reserved, almost seemingly held-back, and to others she would most likely be considered 'snobbish', or perhaps 'anti-social' in kinder terms. She prefers to keep herself away from the focus of other creatures, preferring to listen to conversations than to participate in them, and to observe happenings and consequences. Jiei is actually more intelligent than she believes, however due to her poor self-esteem she takes quite a long time to mull over choices before making a decision, and sometimes even after a decision is made she still would have second thoughts about it.

Aside from when she has alone time for nature walks or stargazing, Jiei seems most contented when she is occupied with work. Whether it be running errands for the pack, hunting, or harvesting, she does not complain when faced with difficult tasks and hardly realizes how she formulates ways to keep her work quick but effective. Jiei is terribly gentle-hearted, however, and finds difficulty in having to kill prey (such as deer, rabbits, etc). Just because of this, however, she should not be underestimated - she hates particularly to watch creatures suffer, so she trains herself to kill her prey immediately.

Jiei has a very loyal and faithful heart -- if she trusts someone or belongs to a family or pack, she will be staunchly devoted to them until the end. It is also because of this trait however that she finds it difficult to find trust in others, because those she loved were killed and those she thought she could trust had betrayed her. She can be friendly and decent when meeting other creatures, but is undeniably cautious and held back. Even when she is with an acquaintance, she tends to hold back information she feels is important for her to keep to herself. She dislikes fighting and arguments, much less warring and battling, and tries to keep from using her claws or teeth as much as possible, preferring to distract the enemy than to resort to violence. She would most likely only use force when it is to defend herself, and probably would only willingly fight if she believed so strongly against an opposite party, or to defend those she loves.

Despite maintaining a positive, or at least pragmatic, outlook in life, Jiei is actually very cynical and bitter about life and its ups and downs. She struggles against pessimism in consequence and happenstance, forcing herself to remain looking on the bright side of things, for it is the only way she knows how to survive every day.

Other:

Jiei's fear of water began when, as a young pup, she was running away from the scene where her family was murdered, and blindly fell into a nearby stream. Despite the waters being shallow, it was still relatively 'deep' for a puppy like her, and in her distress she had no will or strength to fight or swim against the strong current. She nearly drowned, saved only when she was fished out by her pack members. The traumatic experience still haunts her to this day.

Basic Lifeline:

Jiei was born to the alpha and alphess of the wolf pack The Stars' Align on the 23rd of August. She was the second in a litter of three pups, and the only female among her siblings. She and her littermates were loved dearly by their parents, and held in high esteem by the pack, since her older brother was destined to become alpha when he grew -- therefore, his siblings would rise to high ranks as well when they came of age. The only wolves who did not respect this right of heritage were the Betas and Gammas of the pack, who were the siblings of the alpha and alphess -- they were jealous of their eldest brother's position, envious of the pups' inheritance, and were bitter over the fact that, with the birth of the pups, none of the Betas and Gammas would ever have the chance to become alphas.

Wolves would be given titles to signify their belonging in the pack, and as tribute to their most notable attribute/skill. Jiei was most noted for having the most melodious tone of voice the wolves had ever heard from all the pups, and even among themselves. So she was given the title 'Song of the Stars'. Jiei and her siblings were showered with love by her parents and their packmates, and their parents took care to raise them carefully with the morals, values, and skills they believed the pups needed not just as future alphas, but as noble wolves.

When Jiei was 8 months old, the officials of the pack (the Alphas, Betas, and Gammas) took an excursion to uncharted territory, looking for a new campsite for their nomad-like pack. Unknown to the Alpha family, their relatives planned the excursion in such a way that they could lead their Alphas into the territory of human hunters. While her parents fought with valor, and her brothers joining in the fray, the humans were much too powerful for the wolf family, and Jiei, who had run to hide in a hole at the base of a tree, watched her family die at the hands of the humans. Jiei emerged from her hiding place shortly afterwards and ran blindly, falling into a stream as she did so. The strong currents carried her away, and if it was not for her pack who had been looking for their missing alphas, she would have drowned in the waters. The pack took Jiei back to their campsite, where the Betas and Gammas begrudgingly took her in 'as their own', merely for fear of losing the pack's trust.

Jiei was raised more as an errand wolf -- hunting, harvesting, fishing, and doing other odd jobs for the pack -- rather than being cared for as the next pack leader. The Betas and Gammas constantly forced their demands on her, punishing her harshly for mistakes, unforgiving of her inexperience, and regarding her coldly if she had managed to accomplish tasks. Although this made Jiei accustomed to difficult work and rather handy in any situation, it also took its toll on her self-esteem and concept of her own self-worth. Despite this 'indignity', however, the pack continued to recognize Jiei as their leader, and their respect for her grew as they noted her diligence and perseverance in her odd jobs (much to the anger of the Betas and Gammas).

Her low perception of herself and her abilities changed, however, when she met a lone male wolf on a starlit night. She took an instant attraction to the duke, and it was a struggle not to show it especially as they would continue to meet later on. Eventually becoming good friends, the lone wolf taught her to improve her hunting skills, how to stand up for herself in a fight, and how to survive a battle when it would seem she was clearly outnumbered. Every essential thing in survival she learned from the duke, and she was grateful for it -- falling deeper and deeper in love with him as time went on.

When the lone wolf finally admitted his love for her, the two wolves visited the Betas and Gammas of her pack to request their permission to take the lone wolf in as her mate. This further fueled the anger of the Betas and the Gammas, for if Jiei took in a mate, she would officially become alphess of the pack. So the officials invited the two wolves to a 'special grove' where they could bond in peace. However upon reaching this unfamiliar location, the officials then launched a vicious attack upon the two wolves, striking at them till they were unconscious. Jiei awoke, presumably several days later, to find herself cold and alone and the left side of her face horribly marred and disfigured from the attack, and far away from everything she knew and loved.

Jiei has since then wandered the landscapes on her own. She fashioned herself a mask for the disfigured side of her face from bones of small animals, and through her journeys has become quite adept with medicinal herbs.
